Thomas Achieves Racketlon Hatrick

7 September 2023

Our fourth annual Racketlon took place last Saturday and six hardy souls battled to be crowned as Club Towers best all round racquets player. We had a lower turnout this year due to unavailability of some of the regulars but the competition was undiminished. Two groups were formed and played in a round robin format, with the top four players advancing to knockout semi-finals. We began with Tennis, progressed to Squash and then Table Tennis …. and there were some surprise head-to-head scores in the groups stage.

In group 1 were Athar Ahmed, Ian Thomas and Ali (“Afi”) Khan – a real ding dong of scores ensued with Ian narrowly taking a lead after the Tennis leg, Afi winning the Squash and Athar the Table Tennis. Athar narrowly won the group after all three legs with Ian also going through to the semi-final stage.

Group 2 was less close, but not before Steve Adams achieved short-lived glory by winning the Tennis leg, only for Matt Towers and Pat O’Riordan to take a commanding lead after the Squash. Matt then clinched the group by winning the Table Tennis leg, with Pat also advancing to the semi-final stage.

The semi-finals were more one-sided, with Athar pipping Pat 33 -19 and Ian sealing victory 33 – 22 versus Matt.

And so to the final between Ian and Athar. …. Athar’s consistency was still in evidence, but Ian powered his way through the Tennis and Squash games as Athar slowly tired. Ian took an insurmountable lead after these two legs, and yet Athar had one last hurrah with his stolid defence and consistency, beating Ian again in the Table Tennis … 11 – 6. A magnificent effort, but too late to stop Ian from clinching the Racketlon Championships for the 3rd consecutive year!

Many congratulations to Ian – a fantastic achievement!
