Tennis Club Championship Results 2024

Congratulations to our Champions!

Our 2024 Tennis Club Championship finals took place on 12th and 13th October and some exciting matches were played. Two new initiatives this year were the introduction of score calling from the umpire’s chair and the finals of our new Plate competitions. A Plate tournament is an opportunity for first round losers in the main championships to play again in a follow-up event, ensuring all entrants get at least two matches. These Plate finals did not disappoint as we saw some great rallies played throughout. Here is a brief summary of all the matches ….

The Ladies Singles saw a reversal of last year’s final with Jolanta Hawryluk taking the spoils from Debra Schmidt. Well done Jolanta in reclaiming the title again after your last victory in 2021.

The Open Singles final was a rerun of the 2022 (and previous years) final between James Keothavong and Garry Morris. In a high quality match our seven-time champion James came through once again, with incredible accuracy and consistency against Garry, a worthy challenger who has come close so many times.

Our defending Ladies Doubles champions, Claire Raddan and Debra Schmidt, proved too strong against Claire Grant and Emma Tatum-Hume.

Garry and James won their 5th Mens Doubles title in a row, after an early scare against Massimo Ciampi and George Swallow in the final.

Garry and Claire reclaimed the Mixed Doubles title against Claire Grant and Andy Hayward.

Adrian Smart retained the Vets Open Singles title he won last year, this time against Nick Sleap in the final.

The Vets Men’s Doubles was a very close fought affair, with Arif Hakim and David Seymour clinching the title in a championship tie-break against Paul Robinson and Nick Sleap. Lovely to see Arif and David put their narrow defeat in last year’s final behind them – that time against Ian Grove and Glenn Rudd.

In the Vets Mixed Doubles final Garry and Claire completed an impressive victory against Claire Grant and Arif Hakim.

Esteban Stewart beat James Staniforth in the Open Plate Singles final.

And in a match of two halves Paul Thomas carved out a narrow win against Jon Trotman in the Vets Open Singles Plate final. It went right to the wire … 10-8 in the deciding championship tie-break.

Thank you to all the players for entering and to those supporters and members who came to cheer them on. There’s a photo gallery of the finalists here.

Here’s to an even better championships in 2025!
