Squash & Racketball

Squash is being revitalised in North Bedfordshire.

The lack of a true squash club in Bedford, ever since the Kimbolton Road club closed in the late 1990s, has hurt player development at both adult and junior level. We have made great progress in addressing this by reviving junior and adult coaching in Bedford and creating social and competitive squash opportunities for all our members.

Whether you are a hardened squash veteran, or a newcomer to the sport, we have coaching and playing opportunities for you. We are particularly keen to get more people playing the sport in Bedford, so if you have never tried it, pop down and take a look. It is a superb sport for cardio and overall body conditioning, as well as being a lot of fun.

It is also a great sport for youngsters of any age – developing agility, balance and coordination skills, a good eye for a ball and their competitive instincts.

Social Squash & Racketball

We encourage players at all levels of the sport. We operate group coaching sessions for Squash beginners and juniors (see below), and if you like a bit of competition, we have internal box leagues operating, with close to 100 members taking part. These box leagues cover all levels from beginner through to advanced.

Our social squash night is on a Friday evening and social racketball on a Thursday evening and both attract players across a range of ability levels.  We run and host a number of competitions through the year including the County Championships, our own Club  Squash and Racketball Championships and our popular handicap event. We also run regular competitions and matches for our juniors, to help with their development.

We have a dedicated and growing ladies squash section and do look out for the squash and prosecco nights at the Club which always prove popular.

Playing Facilities

Club Towers offers the best squash and racketball facilities in Bedfordshire. Four heated, block and plaster squash courts, with sprung flooring, toughened glass back walls and superb LED lighting. There is a viewing area behind the courts for spectators to watch and socialise. Courts can be booked on your phone via our App or on a PC using our web-booking system. There is no additional charge for court bookings.

Squash Teams

We enter three four into the local Bedfordshire Leagues and one team into the Cambridgeshire League, generally with great success. We also enter the Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Cup competitions and the Bedfordshire Summer League.

Junior Coaching

Our aim is to drive junior squash participation, introducing youngsters to squash and then helping them to enjoy it and develop their game as quickly as their ability allows.

Squash is a brilliant sport for children. It helps to develop not only ball skills, but also the basic movement skills of agility, balance and coordination that underpin many other sporting activities, and important mental skills such as concentration, self-reliance and perseverance. It is also great for overall junior health and fitness.

We run junior coaching after school and at weekends as described in the timetable below. We also organise matches for our juniors and encourage them to take part in local and regional squash tournaments as their ability allows.  You can view our Junior Squash pathway here.

In addition to the Squash coaching at the Club we also run Bedford Squash Academy offering Junior Squash coaching for children not members at the Club, this currently takes place at Mowsbury Squash and Golf Club and more information can be found here.

Junior Programme Descriptions

Mini Squash*

Saturday 9.30-10.15

Aimed at under 8s, mini-squash introduces the game, but also focuses on the ABCs – Agility, Balance and Coordination. Children will play ball games designed to enhance their basic movement skills, and start to get used to racquets, in a safe environment using bigger balls and rackets.

Junior Coaching – Beginner/Early Learner*

Saturdays 10.15-11am & Wednesdays 5 – 5.45pm

Typically aimed at 8 – 15 year old beginners or early learners, these session work on the four basic shots: drive, boast, lob and drop; and start to develop movement patterns around the court. If required, participants will be grouped according to ability. Our coaches keep the sessions fun and lively whilst ensuring basic tactics, technique and rules are taught. The aim is to get players able to play fun but competitive games against our other juniors at the earliest opportunity.

Advanced Junior Coaching

Wednesdays 5.45pm – 6.30pm

This session is designed for our more advanced junior players between the ages 11 -18. Our ethos at Club Towers is to make all our sessions fun and that is no different here. Whether or not your child wants to progress and play team squash and compete in tournaments or just play on a more social level, our coaches will make sure this session meets their needs. If you are unsure whether your child is at the right level for this more advanced session please ask a coach and they can advise.

Performance Squad

The club wish to support any promising juniors and will part-fund some individual coaching sessions for them. This squad is by invitation only. Selection takes place on an annual basis and takes into account each player’s attitude as well as their ability. The performance squad is headed up by an extremely high-quality coaching team with a great pedigree in the sport.

School Squash

We are very keen to see the sport grow and give more children access to play the sport. Successful relationships with BMS, Rushmoor School and Bedford School see nearly 50 pupils a week take to our courts.
