Ball Recycling Helps Milton Ernest Pupils Develop their Tennis Skills

18 July 2024

Longstanding members will know that we recycle tennis balls here at the Club through the Recycaball scheme. We have collection boxes on the courts and our colleague Ed Norris collects and packages them up.  For every ball we receive 12p and the money gets used to deliver tennis coaching in local schools and, of course, the balls don’t end up in landfill! Two great results!

During this Summer term coach Paul Braithwaite visited Milton Ernest C of E School each week, with Edith Cavell Lower School  and Ursula Taylor in Clapham benefitting in previous years. Paul delivered fun tennis coaching and ball games to fifteen children in years five and six, culminating with the children visiting the Club for a Festival of Tennis and competition. Afterwards they were presented with certificates and medals, with some of the children pictured below and all had a great time.

Harley Dowe, PE coordinator from the school told us: “The children really enjoyed the tennis lessons from Paul this term and looked forward to his visit every Tuesday. They have made excellent progress with their knowledge and skills and enjoyed all the different activities each week. Paul is great with the children and has built up a great relationship with them.  It was a fabulous experience for the children to take part in a competition on the courts at Club Towers as part of a celebration event. The school would like to thank Paul and Club Towers for this fantastic opportunity that will hopefully develop a lifelong love of tennis.”

Thank You

A big “thank you” to all our members who recycle their tennis balls with us and make this possible.  One of the Club’s main goals is to get more children playing racquets sports in the county, so we are really pleased to be able to deliver these programmes and to hear such lovely feedback from the children and teachers.

Please do keep recycling with us!

When you notice that your tennis balls have come to the end of their playing life, please donate them by placing them into the tennis bins you will see on Courts 1 and 3 (indoors), or on Court 4 (outdoors).

The balls will not be accepted by Recyaball if they are weather damaged, marked (e.g. with your initials), very discoloured, have damaged / frayed nap or have been worn down to a threadbare state. They will also accept trainer balls and mini / low pressure balls, even if they are the dual coloured or coloured balls.  The full guide can be found here – but if you aren’t sure please pop them in and Ed Norris will know.  And if you have a dog or any other use for the ones that we cannot recycle please do let Ed know on [email protected] and he will send some your way.

Lastly, if you work in a local school and would like to get involved the future, please do get in touch with Steve, our Racquets Operations Manager, on [email protected].
