Wimbledon Success for Club Towers’ Members and Coaches

25 August 2023

Club Towers recently had three players competing in the British Grass Courts Seniors Tennis Tournament on the same courts that Djokovic, Alcaraz, Jabeur and Vondrousova trod just a few short weeks ago. The players involved were Claire Raddan and coaches Boglarka Berecz – Szatmari and Nick Boys, and Nick takes up the story…..

The tournament is the pinnacle of the Seniors Tour for British players. It is an honour to play on the hallowed courts and amazingly the event was blessed with spectacular weather.

The real star of the week was Boglarka! She was having to cope with a foot niggle, but still managed to reach the final of both the ladies 40’s singles and doubles with Claire without dropping a single set en-route.

In the singles final she put in a fantastic display of great tactical awareness and power to dominate her opponent and win her first ‘Major’ senior singles title. She was cheered on by a loud posse of supporters from Club Towers and won in two straight sets: 6-1 6-1.

It was great to see members taking the journey down from Bedford to cheer her on.

Boglarka then made it “2 from 2” when she and Claire teamed up in the doubles final and were just too strong and dominant at the net for their opponents, completing their victory in under an hour to take the trophies, again without dropping a set.

Another great performance and a brilliant success for both Claire and Boglarka!

My own tournament started early on the Sunday in the 55’s doubles where my regular partner and I got through to the quarter-finals, succumbing to the top seeds in 3 very long sets, who then went on to win the tournament in easy fashion. Clearly, we helped sharpen them up!

In the singles, I managed to battle through 3 rounds of the 55’s singles beating the 3 seed in the process and then had to play the 2 seed in the semi-final. The cheering from the watching Club Towers’ was a massive help in spurring me on to take the first set 6-2. Sadly, I picked up a back injury in the second set and this did not help! Eventually, losing a very long 3-hour battle 7-5 in the third set. Thoroughly enjoyed the run to the semi-finals and am already looking forward to next year!

Congratulations to everyone involved from us all here at the Club!
