Thomas Retains Table Tennis Crown

11 September 2023

Last Saturday 9th September, we held the annual Club Table Tennis Championships. There was only a small entry this year, and a number of late drop-outs (perhaps due to the beautiful weather!) meant that there were only four competitors on the day. However, this did not make it any less keenly fought and there were some tremendous battles, long rallies and high quality table tennis.

At the group stage, Sam Berrill and Matt Towers fought hard against the two top seeds Athar Ahmed and current champion Ian Thomas, with some success in terms of games won, but the reliability and consistency of Ian and Athar ensured that they both proceeded with relative ease to the final. In the Racketlon final the previous week, Athar had beaten Ian in the table tennis leg, so the reigning champion was taking nothing for granted.

The final was a classic, with Athar storming into a two game lead, winning a very tight and nail-biting first game 14-12, after multiple game points for each player, before taking the second more easily 11-5. However, Ian then began to find his range and work out Athar’s tricky spins, and despite a tight fourth game, he ran out the winner by taking the next four games 11-5, 11-9, 11-6, 11-6.

A great final!

Many congratulations to Ian for retaining his title and to Athar for a valiant effort.
