Junior Racquets Coaching at Club Towers

Junior Squash

We have an comprehensive junior Squash programme for all ages and abilities co-ordinated by our highly experienced coaches.

Autumn term starts Monday 4th September with costs vary depending on the session so please do speak to the Reception team for more information and to book. We do offer a drop in weekly rate for Squash sessions so a junior can join at any point in the term, the Reception team can also help you with this.

The sessions available for this term are outlined below. If you are unsure which session would be best for your child, please do speak to our Reception team or email [email protected] who will be able to help.

Saturdays

9.30 -10.15am – Mini Squash 4 – 7 years

Aimed at under 8s, mini-squash introduces the game, but also focuses on the ABCs – Agility, Balance and Coordination. Children will play ball games designed to enhance their basic movement skills, and start to get used to racquets, in a safe environment using bigger balls and rackets.

10.15 – 11am – Age 8 +

Typically aimed at 8 – 15 year old beginners or early learners, these session work on the four basic shots: drive, boast, lob and drop; and start to develop movement patterns around the court. If required, participants will be grouped according to ability. Our coaches keep the sessions fun and lively whilst ensuring basic tactics, technique and rules are taught. The aim is to get players able to play fun but competitive games against our other juniors at the earliest opportunity.

Wednesdays

5.00 – 5.45pm – Age 8 +

Typically aimed at 8 – 15 year old beginners or early learners, these session work on the four basic shots: drive, boast, lob and drop; and start to develop movement patterns around the court. If required, participants will be grouped according to ability. Our coaches keep the sessions fun and lively whilst ensuring basic tactics, technique and rules are taught. The aim is to get players able to play fun but competitive games against our other juniors at the earliest opportunity.

5.45 – 6.30pm – Age 11-18

This session is designed for our more advanced junior players between the ages 11 -18. Our ethos at Club Towers is to make all our sessions fun and that is no different here. Whether or not your child wants to progress and play team squash and compete in tournaments or just play on a more social level, our coaches will make sure this session meets their needs. If you are unsure whether your child is at the right level for this more advanced session please ask a coach and they can advise.

We are always keen to invite new players, of all abilities. We have racquets available to borrow but please do remember non-marking clean shoes. Costs vary depending on the session so please do speak to the Reception team for more information and to book.

Bedford Squash Academy

Bedford Squash Academy (an initiative we launched in 2022) runs from Mowsbury Golf & Squash Centre, with the sessions taking place on Fridays at 6pm. They are run by our own expert coaches, but are open to all youngsters, whether Club members or not. If you have a child who might like to join the group from September, or know of someone who might, then please email [email protected]. The first half term’s sessions are free to new joiners.   

Junior Tennis

We have an extensive junior programme for all ages and abilities co-ordinated by highly experienced coaches using coaching system, System 9.

The sessions available for this term and descriptions for the tennis sessions are outlined below. If you are unsure which session would be best for your child, please do speak to our Reception team and they will be happy to help.

Tennis Tots

This is the start of your tennis journey, a 45 minute session for children aged 2.5 to 4 which focuses on hand-eye coordination, movement, balance and lots of fun!  We ask that parents/guardians stay courtside with their children, we find children get the most out of the session when playing together.

Mondays 1pm – 1.45pm.

Hot Shots (S9 1-5)

Using our new coaching System 9, level 1 will enable a self start rally and to maintain that rally up to 20 shots using both left side and right side.   Aimed at ages 4 + plus, the start of their tennis coaching journey.  This will lead to a net license.  Fun/gamed based teaching approach. The next levels of our S9 pathway, will teach you control the ball to the length of the Mini Red court using forehand and backhands and starting to develop better swing shapes. The aim is to be able to hit a 20 shot rally to consistent length

Hot Shots (S9 4-7)

From Level 4 we introduce the crosscourt element to the game and learn to rally in different stances. We are looking to be able to maintain a 10 shot rally crosscourt on both forehand and backhand shots.

Thursdays 17.00-17.55

Aces (S9 3-6)

A 1 hour session for ages 8-10, this will be your first step onto a larger court for beginners and intermediate players. We will develop your technique through drills and playing points using our new system 9 coaching pathway. We will be introducing specific movement, technical improvement and sound tactical awareness to build upon and further develop your hot shots tennis pathway/journey. We aim for you to start playing matches and be ready to move up to Slammers (S9 3-4).

Thursdays 17.00 – 18.00
Saturdays 10.00 – 11.00

Slammers (S9 3-6)

This 1 hour session is the first step onto a full court for ages 9-11. These sessions will be designed to improve your established technique and basic tactical awareness for improver plus players.  The main focus of the sessions will be on serving, return of serve and rally development as per the System 9 pathway.

Thursdays 17.00 – 18.00
Saturdays 10.00 – 11.00

Team (S9 4-7)

These will be drills and practical point based sessions coaching you to compete at your highest level.  We would expect participants to compete regularly.

Aimed at ages 12+

Mondays  18.00 – 19.00
Saturdays 11.00 – 12.00

Coaching at Club Towers – System 9

Below are the various stages that each child will have to master before they can move to the orange level and refer to the S number you see in brackets above.

After completing each level they will receive a certificate of completion.

• Stage 1 – The Self-Bounce Hit

• Stage 2 – The Service Box

• Stage 3 – Half Court Tennis

• Stage 4 – Crosscourt Rally with Underarm Serve

PERCENTAGE TENNIS TACTICS

• Stage 5 – Understanding When to Change Direction of The Shot

• Stage 6 – Centre Court Play

• Stage 7 – Working with Angles

• Stage 8 – Long Line Approach and Volley

• Stage 9 – Speciality Shots – Drop Shots, Lob, Smash

This is designed to take approximately 4 years to complete from the age of 4 and players then move onto the Orange stages.
