Join us for a Spinathon Challenge?

31 January 2020

We are excited to announce that our first charity event of 2020 will be a Spinathon. Taking place on 7th March between 1pm and 6pm we are asking our members to join us on the bikes to raise money for our members’ chosen charities Bedfordshire Sands and CHUMS.

There will be five consecutive 45-minute spin classes, with fifteen-minute breaks in between, led by our fantastic instructors. You can sign up to just one, two, three, classes or challenge yourself and do the whole five! It’s £10 per class with all money going to the charities. Instructors are giving their time for free to help us raise as much as possible (a great BIG thank you to them!)

The programme is as follows:

1 – 1.45pm – Low End Endurance- led by Jason Martindale – as the name suggests this is classed as a low intensity workout.   This will be a great start for our event and suitable for beginners; those who’ve never been on a bike but would like to try it – this is the one for you!

2 – 2.45pm – Low to High Endurance – led by special guest instructor Rebecca Sharrock – this will build upon the first hour and start to build towards high intensity. The first half of this class will be similar to the first hour and then in the second half you will be encouraged to push the intensity and get that heart rate up!  We are in for a treat with Rebecca a Gold Level Schwinn Cycling Coach and National Presenter.

3 – 3.45pm – High Intensity Intervals – led by Emma Banks – we will be in the swing of things by now! There will be a strong 10 minute warm up followed by three blocks of high intensity work with rest periods between.

4 – 4.45pm – Fartlek – led by Natalie Efferney – Fartlek (for those that don’t know) is Swedish for “speed play” and is a method that blends continuous (endurance) training with interval speed training. It challenges the body to adapt to various speeds and will keep you on your toes as you keep up with Natalie!

5 – 5.45pm – Controlled Hill Climb/Low End Endurance led by Jason Martindale – to finish the event off Jason will come back to the front and lead everyone in a lower intensity ride to lower the heart rates and cycle everyone off into the Club Lounge for a well-earned post ride celebration.

All members who have taken part are welcome to join us in the Club Lounge for a light buffet, provided free by the Club.

To book, please email Alice on [email protected] with your name, and which classes of the above you would like to book. Alice will then be in touch to take your payment and confirm your place. Places are booked on a first come first serve basis.

We are hoping to raise as much money as we can for local charities Bedfordshire SANDS and CHUMS, the charities chosen by members for us to support this year. Here’s a short overview about the very worthwhile work both do.

CHUMS Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing Service for Children and Young People provides therapeutic support in a variety of ways in Bedfordshire.  CHUMS has developed a unique service delivery model to ensure that children and young people are able to access a service that supports their individual needs.

Bedfordshire Sands is part of Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity. Sands operates throughout the UK, supporting anyone affected by the death of a baby, working to improve the care bereaved parents receive, promoting research and working closely with many different organisations to drive awareness of issues relating to baby loss. Bedfordshire Sands is a volunteer-led group that works to support the charity’s aims in our area.

For those riders taking part, we would also encourage you to ask friends and family to sponsor you, we will be creating a Virgin Money Giving page and will share details with those members signed up asap.

Thank you again to our instructors for helping us organise this event, we can’t wait to see you all on the bikes and to raise lots of money for our charities!
