Greg Rusedski & Richard Fuller Declare our New Club Officially Open
The mixed weather last Saturday (20th May) did not stop members from having a great time at the official opening of Towers Health & Racquets Club, and demonstrated graphically the value of having indoor tennis courts, as the rain sheeted down for most of the afternoon but the fun continued uninterrupted inside.

The Club was officially opened at 5pm by Greg Rusedski, former World No 4 and US Open Finalist, and Richard Fuller, former Bedford & Kempston MP and current parliamentary candidate, in a packed Club lounge. Both guests praised the quality of the facilities and the wonderful, friendly welcome they had received from the members.
The day started early, with our special studio classes at 11am. The two-hour spinathon was a tough challenge but enjoyed by all, whilst Jamie’s gym challenges saw the PTs top of the pile.

One of the highlights of the day was the afternoon session in the indoor tennis hall with Greg Rusedski. Rusedski, now a well-known TV analyst and commentator, was particularly famous in his playing days for holding the world record fastest serve at 149mph. On Saturday, he fired serves down at the members, both young and old, and challenged them to get their returns back in play! Most failed but there were a few successes. Well done to those who managed it – I am sure they will dine out on that for a year or to. Sadly, neither MD Matthew Towers nor GM Steve Davies managed to get that ball back in play!

Greg was fantastic with the juniors. There was a great turn-out and some impressive play. He coached over twenty-five of the Club’s promising youngsters, giving them a day that they will never forget. Then three lucky adult members had the chance to play Greg one on one, and experience the thrill of being on court with a former champion.

The evening concluded with Paul and Declan entertaining everyone with a wonderful exhibition match, demonstrating the speed, power and agility of the world’s top squash players in a superb display of athleticism and skill.

The Club’s fund raising efforts during the day has already managed to raise a few hundred pounds for our selected charities. With money still coming in, we will announce the final total shortly.
Steve Davies, General Manager at the new Club, commented: “We have had a fantastic Grand Opening day, enjoyed by almost 500 of our members. We would like to thank all of our guests, but especially Greg Rusedski and our squash pros, Paul and Declan. They have made the day so memorable for everyone, patiently chatting to our members and posing for countless photographs. It is a day that we will never forget!”
