Glorious Golf Day in the May Sunshine
The decision to postpone the Club Towers golf day from snowy March to 14th May had never looked better than on last Monday morning when the sun shone brightly and sun cream was being liberally applied. Twelve keen and hardy individuals lined up to compete for the inaugural trophy and could not have asked for a better day. The course was in spectacular condition and the hospitality we received from Bedfordshire Golf Club in Stagsden was out of the top draw. After bacon rolls and coffee the draw for the teams was made and off we went to the first tee, with a lot of bravado and banter in the air.
The first nervous 4 tee shots went on their way and the competition was on. As is normally the case with golf, there was a mixture of the spectacularly good and the……….. well, let’s just say, “mixed”. Afterwards, the scores were in, collated and double checked by our professional staff!! And then the winners were announced.
The individual winner was Matt Evans with a superb score of 40 points off a respectable 12 handicap (cut for next year by 5 minimum!), and the runner up was Steve Maguire scoring 36 points and just beating Tom Albone on count-back. The team competition was very close, with Team Evans winning by just three points, with an excellent score of 122.
Special prizes went to Richard Caunt for the longest drive (nearly 300 yards uphill!!!), and Matt Evans with a “lucky” 8 iron taking nearest the pin. The longest walk prize, a coveted golf lesson from Sam Head, former LPGA tour pro, went to Tom Inskip.
My sincere thanks go to Sam Head for all her help in organising and sorting the prizes and to Matthew Towers for making time in his busy schedule and presenting the prizes at the end. Here’s to next year’s competition!
