Club Towers well represented at the British Open Masters

7 January 2022

The masters squash scene is a thriving and extremely competitive one that caters for age groups nationally from O35’s all the way up to O75’s! The season consists of three regional events around the country followed by the British Open and then the National Championships. The top six in each age category qualify for the England team and many are taking part with that goal in mind.

The 2022 British Open was held in early December at Colets Squash Club in Surrey and we had three of our own members competing; Tony Blott in the O65’s, Steve Barlow in the O60’s and Steve Davies in the O40’s.

Tony had a good victory in his first match winning 3-1 but unfortunately had to withdraw with the score at 1-1 in his second match with a calf injury.

Steve Barlow had a close first match getting past a very tricky opponent 3-2 having been 2-0 down. In the last sixteen match he then produced a fantastic performance beating the 3 / 4 seed in another 3-2 battle. He finally, lost out in the quarter finals going down 3-0.

Steve Davies also reached the quarter finals in the O40’s event, winning a tight first match 3-1 and then gaining a good victory against a higher seed in the last sixteen. Steve finally lost out to the German number 3 / 4 seed and eventual finalist.

Overall, it was a successful event for the Club Towers competitors and hopefully, more success will follow in the final two events of the season.
