Celebrating our female squash players and new league this Women’s Squash Week

21 September 2021

Women’s Squash Week is an international celebration of squash and an invitation to women across the world to try squash or come back to it. As many of you know, we love Squash here at Club Towers and are really passionate about getting as many people playing this brilliant sport as we can.  We wanted to celebrate our female squash players and also highlight all the playing opportunities we offer. We will start with….

Why we love Squash!

Squash is a fantastic, fun sport to play and, just as importantly, it provides a real workout. It’s a great way to get fit, improve your hand-eye coordination and agility, alleviate stress and, as your game progresses, it gives a real mental workout too. When playing competitively you can burn more calories playing squash than with most other sports. It’s playable all year round and, as we head into Autumn and Winter, coming inside to play may be an extra attraction! Squash is also very social and can be a great way to meet new people. We already have a number of girls and women who play squash at the Club but we are always very keen to encourage more.

Ladies Squash and Prosecco

Coaches Jen and Juliet have been running our popular Ladies Squash and Prosecco evenings for two years now (with Covid breaks) and our next one is on 30th September, followed by 4th November and 2nd December.  These are fun, sociable evenings, suitable for all playing abilities and a really good to way to add some activity and exercise to your week. After an hour or so on court with coaches Jen and Juliet we head over to the Club Lounge for a well-earned glass of Prosecco.

All evenings are 7.15-8.45pm. Sessions are free for racquets members and £6 for member guests and non-racquets members, all bookable at Reception. Please make sure you book a space in advance so we can plan numbers.

Ladies Squash League

Off the back of these evenings, with women liking the sport and wanting to play more we are delighted to say that we started our first Ladies squash league in August.  We have 13 ladies signed up and placed into divisions, playing matches, and meeting new people.  Whether you are a complete beginner or play regularly we would love to get more ladies playing.  This league will finish on the 30th September but we are aiming to get a new league started in October. The focus is on keeping fit and having fun on court, whilst introducing some competitive play.

If you are interested, then please do put your name down on the sign-up sheet in the squash corridor or email the league co-ordinator Lottie on [email protected] for more information.

Squash Welcome

For all racquets members we also offer a free squash welcome. Whether you’ve recently become a racquets member, or have been a racquets member for a while, if you would like to give squash a try but are not sure where to start, the best thing to do is book a free squash welcome with Ed. He will take you through some shots, give you some basic starter coaching and advise you on the next steps available to you at the Club. He will also introduce you to racketball. Your welcome session can be arranged at a time convenient for you, so please contact Ed directly through [email protected]

Social Squash Morning

Ed also manages a WhatsApp group and social squash morning, telling members when the social squash is on (it runs most Thursday mornings) and helping to arrange matches. If you would like to be a part of this group, please do get in touch with Ed ([email protected]) or add your name to the social squash sign-up sheet in the squash corridor.

Junior Squash

We run our junior coaching on Saturday’s and Wednesday’s and always welcome new players. The sessions run as follows:

Wednesday:        5-5.45 pm for those aged 8 and over at beginner and intermediate standard

Saturday:             10.15 – 11am for the 4–7-year-olds

Saturday:             2.45 – 3.30pm for those aged 8 and over at beginner and intermediate standard

If you have a child who is keen to try, please do encourage them to come along to the sessions.  These can be booked at Reception for the whole term, or we offer a pay and play option of £6.50 per week.

Moving Forward…. More Players!

We are immensely proud of how many ladies we have playing at the Club, but we won’t rest on our laurels – we want more!  Do keep an eye on our Facebook page and our newsletter for more events and opportunities to play in the future.
