Vets Teams Thrive Despite Tough Summer Tennis Season
Our 18 teams competing in the Bedfordshire County Summer Tennis leagues this year came up against stiff opposition in some matches, with our finishing league positions in the main league down on last summer. Nonetheless our Ladies A and Mixed A teams still finished high in their respective divisions and are keen to win their titles back next summer!
Our four Open teams had tough campaigns, struggling at times to field their strongest players, but are regrouping now ready for the winter season ahead.
Ladies C had a very good campaign in Division 2, winning 6 out of 7 matches. Langford A beat them very narrowly by three crucial match tie-breaks in their head-to-head match, otherwise they would have won the division themselves. Bad luck Jane and all the team!
Vets Teams
We had more success in the Vets League. Our evergreen Ladies A, superbly organised by captain Nicola Wilson-Fowler, were champions again with six wins out of seven in the top division.
The Mixed B team, led by Sue Middlemas, responded to last year’s relegation by winning division 2 this time, and Mixed C (Lawrence Kuttner) came 2nd in the same division, up four places from last summer. Congratulations to Nicola, Sue, Lawrence and all your players for a great season.
Our Open A and Mixed A Vets teams finished a creditable 3rd in their top divisions. Glenn Rudd does a great job leading both teams.
Ladies B (Kathy Wallis) battled hard in the top flight against stiff opposition , winning two matches to finish 6th in division 1 for the second season running.
Massive thanks to all of the captains for their sterling efforts in organising their teams. Two captains are standing down after the summer – Mark Wasilweski and Gary Armstrong – we hope they will be back at some point! And we would like to welcome two new captains to replace them – Tom Hall and David Waterfield – good luck in your new roles!
…. Not forgetting the players too for supporting your teams and making the club proud. Good luck in the Winter League matches now underway!

How to Join a Team
If you are interested in joining a team, please email Racquets Operations Manager Steve Adams, or you can check the Tennis Noticeboard for a list of captains and their contact numbers. By challenging a captain to a friendly doubles match this is a great way to get their attention, and they will also explain more about their teams and the fixture schedule too. Currently there are a lot of players in the squads so please be patient while the captains filter you into a team.
