Squash – Are the youngsters taking over?
When we opened our doors in 2017, we had a number of priorities for the Club. One of these was to rejuvenate squash in North Bedfordshire, which had lacked any sort of “hub” for two decades. One result of this was that there were almost no juniors playing this great sport and few young adults. Our first set of squash box leagues reflected this. The top box league looked like this:
Steve Davies
Bruce St Leger
Will Montgomery
Ian Thomas
Ivan Schimanski
Jools Cooper
All excellent players, but with an average age (in 2017) of 44.
Roll forward 8 years and we can see the effect of some investment in coaching at the Club and the wider promotion of squash as a superb sport for health, fitness and fun.
Here is the latest “top 5” in the box leagues:
Ben Mann
Jonathan Towers
Jake Joyce
Dan Evans
Ryan Bezer
Average age of these 5 star players……. just 22!! With two of them still U19 juniors.
Can “the oldies” fight back from illness/injury and loss of form? I doubt it but we shall give it a good try!!
Watch this space……..
