Record Fourteen Teams in Top Bedfordshire Divisions

8 November 2024

We had 18 teams competing in the Bedfordshire County Summer Tennis leagues this year and once again some fantastic results were achieved. Three out of the 18 teams won their divisions, and we have a record 14 teams in the top divisions … a testament to our strength in depth. A summary of the results is shown below, followed by some of the team highlights. All league tables can also be found here.

Open A

Led by captain Garry Morris, our Open A team won 3 matches and lost 3, up against a dominant and undefeated Riverside A this year. Tied on points with Flitwick A (who finished 2nd) and our own B team (4th).

Open B

Well done captain Paul Thomas and the Open B team! ….. Also winning 3 matches and tied on points with the A team, but narrowly nudged into 4th place on sets for and against.

Open C

A creditable 4 wins in the 2nd division by captain Mark Wasilewski’s team resulted in a mid-table 4thplace finish … only a whisker away from winning the division. It really came down to one crucial match against Sharnbrook A, who clinched top spot.

Open D

In only their second summer since our D team were formed and after a brilliant promotion last season, this was a big test for our Open D team in Division 2 for the first time. Great experience though and you will be stronger next summer. …… Well done captain James Mackley and all the team!

Ladies A

What can we say about the commanding dominance of our ladies A team that hasn’t been said before? Captain Sophie Cable led them to a fantastic six wins out of six this summer and topped the Bedfordshire ladies league once again. Brilliant effort ladies!

Ladies B

Once again, a strong mid-table performance by Amanda Greenland’s B team with three wins out of six – firmly established in the top Division.

Ladies C

After last summer’s promotion from Division 2, captain Jane Jafarifar’s plucky C team played well in all six matches, and narrowly fell short by just 3 games in their defeat on games count-back against Riverside B. So close! Bad luck ladies.

Mixed A

A magnificent seven wins in seven matches clinched top spot in Division 1 again this summer, retaining their title from last year. Well done to Claire Raddan and all the team. And they have started well in the winter league with a great 3-1 win against Flitwick A this week too.

Mixed B, C and D

This is the first summer all four of our Mixed teams have competed in the top division, following promotions for the C and D teams last summer. Dorian Abram’s B team finished solidly in mid-table (winning three out six matches), the C team, led by Nicola Wilson-Fowler, just one position below and Karen Wright’s D team just falling short of a win against our own B team in their head-to-head match.

Vets Teams

Results were tougher to come by in the Vets League but as always, our strong Ladies A, captained by Nicola Wilson-Fowler, had an excellent 100% record with six wins out of six in the top division.

Our Open A team finished a creditable 3rd in Division 1 and the Mixed A team even better as runners-up. A big thanks to captain Glenn Rudd, for his hard work and organisation in running both teams.

There have been some captaincy changes among the other Vets captains at the start of the current winter league and we give thanks to them all … Kathy Wallis, Bill Nichol, Lawrence Kuttner, Neil Anderson and Sue Middlemas.

…. Not forgetting the players too for supporting your teams and making the club proud. Good luck in the Winter League matches now underway!

How to Join a Team

If you are interested in joining a team, please email Racquets Operations Manager Steve Adams, or you can check the Tennis Noticeboard for a list of captains and their contact numbers. By challenging a captain to a friendly doubles match this is a great way to get their attention, and they will also explain more about their teams and the fixture schedule too. Currently there are a lot of players in the squads so please be patient while Steve and the captains filter you into a team.
