Mixed Doubles Tennis Pairs Bask in Sunshine
In more ways than one coach Danny Pymont ran a brilliant mixed doubles tennis tournament in the sunshine last Saturday. Eight ladies and eight men paired up in two round robin groups, each playing three timed 25-minute matches against the other three pairs in their group. All the pairs then advanced to a seeded quarter final draw, with the top two pairs from each group on opposite sides of the draw. The quarter-finals were all competitive, with scores as follows ….
Lynne Quarmby & Richard Woodburn beat Lili and Martin Granger 6-3
Stephanie Wilson-Fowler & Tom Hall beat Lynne Hawkins & Ben Jardine 6-5 (Phew, so close!)
Karen & Ian Wright beat Caroline Matthews & Tim Wilson 6-3
Krystal Heath & Rob Mortimer beat Kathy Wallis and Enzo Chiarelli 6-3
The semi-finals results were …
Lynne & Richard beat Stephanie and Tom 6-5 (another titanic tussle)
Krystal & Bob beat Karen & Ian 6-2
And so to the final – perfectly set for the two (so far) undefeated pairs to decide the winners and runners-up: Lynne and Richard versus Krystal and Bob. Neither pair could establish a clear lead and at 5 games all it went down to a tie-break decider. That too went right to the wire, with Lynne and Richard clinching the win at 7 points to 5. Congratulations to the winners – Lynne and Richard – and to all the players on the day.
