Juniors delight at Spring tennis tournament

13 March 2025

Last Saturday we hosted our Spring term junior tennis tournament, run across five age groups. 32 children took part and all seven courts were in use …. buzzing with young talent. We saw some very close matches and great endeavour at all levels.

Mini Red Group One (ages 4 to 6)

Our youngest group event was run by coach Dave, with five children testing their skills in a series of tasks. Points were gained for each task and all were presented with medals for their achievements. A great effort by Elin, Rosie, Artemis, Christopher and Joseph.

Mini Red Group Two (ages 6 to 8)

The more experienced red ball children were formed into three groups of three organised by coach Danny. Using sponge balls they each played short matches of “first to 10 points”, which produced some fantastic rallies. This event was spread across three mini courts, with our coaching team scoring the matches and relaying scores back to Danny at the helm. The three group winners were Siena, Jack and Toby, with all other children progressing into a 2nd stage of group matches. The matches In the top group were very close, with Toby narrowly winning both games. Well done Toby, Jack and Siena! You played with great sportsmanship too.

Orange Group (ages 8 to 11)

This was our largest group with 13 children, spread over six courts. Orange ball players play on a full width court area with a shortened baseline. Sophia, Siena and Veer won their groups and so progressed to the final group stage. Once again the matches were very tight, but Veer just had the edge on the day, with Sophia finishing in second place. Bad luck Siena. You are improving very fast, so please keep up your good work!

Green Group (ages 9 to 11)

The Green ball stage is similar to Orange ball, the difference being that it is played on a full size tennis court with slightly faster balls. We had 3 players in this group, Matilda, William and Kurt. Short sets to four games were played, with William victorious in both matches, but a very close match ensued between Kurt and Matilda for second place.

Yellow Group (ages 10 to 12)

Sadly, due to late withdrawals only two players competed in this age group, Baxter and Ben. Played on a full size court with yellow balls they played a best of three short sets to decide the winner, and they were very closely matched. It could have gone either way but Ben came through to win it. Bad luck Baxter, you pushed Ben all the way.

Congratulations to the winners and all the participants too. Thanks to the parents too for your support and cheering the children on.

Our next event is Play Your Way to Wimbledon (PYWTW) on Saturday 26th April, when we will run individual boys singles and girls events for those born between 2011 and 2014.
