Great Performances by Club Towers Members at County Closed Tennis Championships

We had a jamboree of tennis at the Club last Sunday as we hosted the best tennis players in Bedfordshire in the 2026 County Closed Championships finals. Hosting of this event is traditionally rotated between the other county clubs such as Riverside, Flitwick and Dunstable and we were proud to take our turn this year for the first time. 156 players entered this LTA Grade 3 event back in January, with a mixture of singles and doubles knockout draws ranging from Open age category through to higher age delimited categories. There were 21 events in total, which culminated with 17 finals on the day, on the Club Towers courts. These were high quality finals and made for great viewing. Of the 40 finalists 11 were Club Towers members or coaches (all listed in red below), who were well supported by the spectators on the day.

Open Events

Men’s Singles (series 1) – Harry Mabbutt beat George Stanton     6-1 / 6-3            (Harry took revenge for last year’s defeat to George)

Women’s Singles – Jessica Gear beat Jolanta Hawryluk 6-1 / 6-2            (Heroic resistance by Jolanta against the number one seed and defending champion)

Men’s Singles (series 2) – Ryan Bezer beat Jack White   2-6 / 7-5 / 6-2    (A fantastic comeback from a set behind by our own Club Champion)

Men’s Singles (series 3) – Seth Johnson beat Tom Peat 6-3 / 6-1            (Bad luck Tom – just 15 years old. The youngest player on the day … What a talent!)

Men’s Doubles – Mattie Daulnay & Max Howard beat Ethan Chapman & George Stanton 7-6 / 7-6            (Breathtaking rallies by four young men demonstrating great speed and skill)

Women’s Doubles – Jessica Gear & Emma Brown beat Jolanta Hawryluk & Kayla Williams           7-6 / 6-3            (Bad luck Jolanta! – so close)

Mixed Doubles – Jessica Gear & George Stanton beat Harriet Potter & Bilal Malik            6-2 / 6-1            (A dominant performance by Jessica and George, retaining their title from last year)

Over 35’s

Men’s Singles – Ben Worbey beat Garry Morris   6-3 / 6-3           

Men’s Doubles – Devon Moore & Ben Worbey beat Nick Boys & Garry Morris   6-3 / 6-1

Over 40’s

Women’s Doubles – Martha Harberson & Claire Raddan beat Madeleine Hyde & Nicola Morris      4-6 / 6-2 / 10-7   (A very close match decided by the championship tie-break).

Mixed Doubles – Martha Harberson & Nick Boys beat Claire Raddan & Garry Morris         6-2 / 6-3   (The last of three tough matches on the day. Bad luck Garry)

Over 45’s

Men’s Singles – Danny Pymont beat Francis Caldwell   (walkover)

Women’s Singles – Nicola Morris beat Nicola Wilson Fowler        6-0 / 6-3

Men’s Doubles – Adrian Smart & Mike Helluja beat Danny Pymont & Francis Caldwell   (walkover)

Over 50’s

Women’s Doubles – Julie Humpherson & Sue Worboys beat Amanda Greenland & Emma Tatum-Hume  (walkover)

Mixed Doubles – Claire Grant & Arif Hakim beat Sue Worboys & Dean Mills          4-6 / 7-5 / 10-7   (Another great comeback by Claire and Arif to clinch the deciding championship tie-break)

Over 55’s

Men’s Singles – Nick Boys beat Chris Chin          6-3 / 6-0

Women’s Singles – Amanda Greenland beat Amanda Lines         6-4 / 6-4           
(A great result by one of our very own team captains. Well played Amanda!)

Men’s Doubles – Nick Sleap & Gino Ferretti beat Paul Hammond & John Kitchener           7-6 / 3-6 / 10-7   (What a match! .. and a sweet victory for Nick and Gino)

Over 65’s

Men’s Singles – Paul Hammond beat Kevin Todd            7-5 / 6-2

Men’s Doubles – Paul Hammond & John Kitchener beat Mike Bartlett & Kevin Todd           6-4 / 6-2
