Cable and Smith Take 2026 Towers Cup
The Towers Cup took place last week, when 8 pairs played a mixture of doubles and singles matches in two round robin groups, with winners and runners up in each group advancing to a knock out stage of semi-finals and then a final. Each match consisted of two singles rubbers and one doubles, with a rubber being a rapid tie-break to 10. All the matches were evenly matched, as many rubbers finished at 10-8 or 10-7, and some even closer on a sudden death point to win 10-9. Emma Tatum-Hume and partner Alex Jafarifar finished top in group one, while Sophie Cable and Richard Smith clinched 2nd place, for both pairs to progress to the semi-finals stage.
In group two Chris Kennedy and partner Tom Hall powered through to top place, while Adrian Smart and Nick Murthwaite took the runners-up spot.
The semi-finals were even closer affairs, with the scores as follows …
SF1
Adrian vs Alex (8-10)
Nick vs Emma (8-10)
Adrian and Nick M vs Alex and Emma (10-9)
Alex and Emma advanced to the final.
SF2
Chris vs Sophie C (10-7)
Tom vs Richard (9-10)

Meanwhile there were play-off matches between the 3rd and 4th placed pairs from the groups stage. Andy Hayward and Alex Wakely beat Rebecca Garrard and George Swallow 10-9 in the deciding doubles rubber in their match and Sophie Zillmann and Nick Sleap beat Nicola Wilson-Fowler and Gary Morris 10-9 in their doubles match too. Both matches decided on a sudden death point!
The final was also decided in the doubles rubber, which Sophie and Richard clinched 10-7. Congratulations to all the players and thanks to Jordan for organising a great night of tennis.
