A Record-Breaking Winter Season for Club Towers Squash!

2 May 2025

The 2024-25 winter squash season was one to remember for Club Towers, with unprecedented success across a number of teams and competitions that resulted in three trophies overall.

Once again, we entered one team in Cambridgeshire League Division 1, two teams in Bedfordshire League Division 1, and two in Beds League Division 2. New rule changes in the Cambridgeshire Cup also allowed us to field two teams for the first time—adding another exciting challenge to the mix.

Cambridgeshire League & Cup Glory

After several seasons of near-misses, our Cambs League team finally went all the way—winning both the league and the cup in a dominant campaign.

The arrival of Ben Mann gave the squad a huge boost, strengthening the top order and adding depth. Despite only losing two matches all season, Hunts County kept us on our toes and pushed us all the way. It all came down to a final match showdown – Club Towers vs. Hunts County, where a brilliant team performance, backed by a fantastic group of travelling supporters, secured the title.

In the Cup, changes to the rules meant we could enter a second side for the first time. Our first team entered the Division 1&2 competition, while the second team joined the Division 3&4 draw—expertly managed by Babs Rai. Both teams cruised through the early rounds and made it to the final.

The finals, held at Hunts County, were a fitting end to a great season. The first team sealed the double with a convincing 4–0 win over Ely, a Division 2 team who impressed by making the final and pushing hard in every match.

But it was the second team that stole the show. Their final against Hunts County second team was the most gripping match of the day. Young Toby Sutliff put in a strong showing but lost the opener. His dad levelled the score with a gritty five-set win, followed by a clinical performance from Phil Jenkins to make it 2–1. That left Ian Rounce, who’s had a standout season, to decide the tie. With everything on the line and the match level at 2–2, Ian edged a tense fifth set to bring home the cup – a stunning debut season result for the second team!

More Success in the Bedfordshire Leagues

There was plenty to celebrate in the Beds League too. Club Towers 2 stormed to the Division 1 title with a commanding 49-point margin. The consistency and availability of the squad—Steve Davies, Jonathan Towers, Matt Towers, Jake Joyce, Ian Rounce, Jools Cooper, Mike Bowman, and Simon Marshall—was key. The development and improvement of Jonathan, Jake, and Ian’s games stood out and was another key reason for the success.  In amongst lots of great results a pivotal win over runners up Open University in early January was probably the highlight.

Club Towers 1 finished 5th in Division 1. Despite a strong looking squad on paper, led by captain Steve Barlow and the addition of Ben Mann, injuries and availability issues held them back. With better luck next season, they’ll be aiming to challenge at the top end of the table once again.

In Division 2, now four years old and thriving with nine teams, Club Towers 4 had an excellent season under the leadership of Alex Buckhurst, finishing 3rd. Club Towers 3, captained by Babs Rai, came in 8th, though just a few points separated them from 5th.

Both teams blended experience and new talent, and it was brilliant to see younger players like Eve, Toby, and Charlie thrive and both teams really enjoying both the competitive and social element that team squash brings. A special shout-out to Charlie, who picked up multiple awards at the end-of-season do!

Huge thanks to all the captains for the time and effort behind the scenes, and to everyone who supported in the squash corridor throughout the season. It’s been a great season and a groundbreaking year for the club in the Cambs League. Well done to everyone involved!
